Harry Potter Bookends Recalled By Giftco Due to Violation of Lead Paint Standard

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Harry Potter Bookends

Units: About 36,000

Importer: Giftco Inc., of Vernon Hills, Ill.

Hazard: The paint on the bookends contains excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves poly-stone bookends painted and shaped in the characters of the Harry Potter book series. Bookend characters include Harry Potter, Hedwig and Hermione, and Crookshank.

Sold at: Elementary school fundraising programs, discount and dollar stores nationwide from June 2004 through January 2006 for between $3 and $28.

Manufactured in: Hong Kong

Remedy: Consumers should immediately take the recalled bookends away from children and return them to Giftco for a refund.

The Friends of Leesburg Public Library are holding an essay contest. Students in all grades are invited to enter.

Write a fantastic story in 500 words or less and earn your chance at one of three great prizes!

1st place: $100 2nd place: $75 3rd place: $50

There are three categories: 4th-5th grade; 6th – 8th grade; and 9th – 12th grade

DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 15, 2008!!

All Lake County students are aligible to enter. Entries must be presented in English and be the original work of the student. Only one entry per studet. All entries are free and must be accompanied by a signed 2008 Entry Form (available at the library or email leesburgyouthservices[at]gmail[dot]com)

Fantastic Contraption is a deceivingly simple game that becomes more and more challenging as the levels increase. You design your own machine using only wheels and connectors to move an object into the goal. There are no points. You are only competing against yourself but once you pass a level you can see the way that others designed their own machines.

San Diego Comic-Con 2008!!

As some of you know I spent last weekend in San Diego surrounded by comics, manga, movies, and people in costume! It was a blast! I saw a lot of crazy things and brought home some super goodies for you all!! Some will be given out as prizes for Teen Read Week, some will be given out at the Breaking Dawn party, and some are books that need to be reviewed!!

PAWS Dogs Make Last School Year Visit to Leesburg Library

It’s time to bark “till we meet again,” to the PAWS Dogs at the Leesburg Public Library. Wednesday, April 9 at 3:30 PM will be the pooches last school year visit. (Don’t worry; they’ll be back for reading practice again, next year). Princess, Mimi, Tyler, Candy and all the other specially trained therapy dogs are looking for your early reader to visit and read them a story as they wind up this year’s regularly scheduled visits. Don’t miss the opportunity to get a last story in with these willing pups and their wonderful, patient owners.
